Cabazon Electrician

Here in the Inland Empire we have a very large community of commercial outlets called Desert Hills Premium Outlets and the Cabazon Outlets. There are over 100 clothing and accessory retailers, and several food service retailers. This produces opportunities for the service industry. Our company has worked there installing lighting and back in 2009 we converted a national retailer Perfumania.

This was a great opportunity and it can be lucrative for electricians, and there are always Tenant Improvements continually going on there at the Outlets.

Sign, Sign, Sign

Every now and again we get a smart character that slithers around signing a contract. However, it usually happens when things are busy and after the submission of a bid. The customer calls and say “OK, go ahead and do the job”. Then the job is scheduled and/or the work is being performed. This happened yesterday, but it didn’t affect us much. The customer is an old time owner of several apartments and houses. We knew the cash was available for payment and we had worked for this person before so even though we had begun the new project, we didn’t see any need for alarm.

When we finished the job, we went to collect and the customer said; “Can you give us a discount?”. To which was replied; “How do you figure?”. The bill was paid however, we granted a one time discount to the customer for $100.00. This appeased the customer and it didn’t break the bank on our end.

Lessons learned 101: Have your customer sign the contract.

Do this, do that

One thing that helps us to expand and to grow is when customers begin to understand that you have a competent crew. After being at this current project, we have a customer that continues to add more to our plate. It’s awesome when a customer continues to add work on a project. It secures paychecks for a while and helps our companies growth.

We started this project where the customer asked us to change some lighting, and repair some outlets and switches. We got the estimate, so we returned to the job to find out that the customer wanted 4 extra lights changed out, repair their heater that’s not working and move the master bathroom GFCI closer to the sink. Well at the end of the day they also wanted us to return to repair more outlets and add 2 new exhaust fans, a ceiling heater, 2 new bathroom sconces, troubleshoot a bedroom and add 2 more GFCI’s.

Wow, That is pretty cool! Thank the Good Lord for work!

Friendly People

We get calls from people every day. People looking for an electrician that will do what they ask. It’s sounds simple and it really is if you put you heart in the right place, but everyone shares the same views, and unfortunately today that’s really an issue. We here a JB Electric are not entrusted into peoples homes to express our views, they just need an electrician. I have had experiences where things come up however, we just simply try to avoid the politics of the day and do our job. Politics change but people are still friendly for the most part regardless of where they may or may not stand. Going into a project you don’t really know who people are, and they are usually friendly and interested in only one reason for you being there, and that is to do the work you are being paid to do.

We had a repairman into our home one time that was there to repair a major appliance. Halfway through the job he began to rant about “the other party” but what he didn’t realize was that we happen support that “other party”. It got so bad that I felt disrespected in my own home so I began to defend my stance. By the time he was finished I was cordial and helped him out but, I learned a good lesson from a bad source, and that is do not discuss politics with your customers. It turns them off and the friendly people can turn into an opposition in a heart beat. If that happens it can become uncomfortable and it breeds a disdaining environment. It’s not only bad for business, it’s disrespectful to homeowners and their views. You don’t want to lie to them by omission but you need to respectfully disagree if they happen to press the issues of faith and politics.

Be respectful, be kind, be friendly. It will ultimately win customers over and they won’t hate “the other party” so much. Show them love. Everyone responds friendly to love.

What did you say

It’s inevitable that you will have problems in business. Some can be avoided. The Bible says that a wise man sees evil coming and hides himself but the foolish go on and they are punished for it (Prov. 22:3). That’s as easy as believing in Divine Design. But there are some things you can’t see. One case I am thinking about is a job that we did where there was a problem with communication between a customer and our company. During a conversation with that customer, he blurted out  “Save your explanation, I’m and Electrical Contractor“. Later in the conversation I was prompted to share some voltage surges and lighting specifications. At that point his tone changed and it was if I was speaking in Chinese. He really didn’t have a clue as to what I was telling him. I thought to myself, “why would a C-10 Electrical Contractor hire another Electrical Contractor to do his work?” It seem apparent although I have to take him at his word, that he was not being honest.

Some people have a means of controlling others by firing off statements that aren’t necessarily true. I mean think about it, If you are a Beautician, wouldn’t it be a little unnerving or intimidating if someone were to say to you while you were cutting their hair “I am a beautician and I wouldn’t cut hair like you do”. Sometimes people are naturally honest and just maybe they are telling you the truth. But some people have maligned others in order to intimidate them or undermine with the intent to control or cause fear. Like saying  “I am an Electrical Contractor” two months after this customer hired us to do Electrical work, really?

I suggest you try to see the unseen. If you see evil coming, hide yourself and your business. Voluntary prayer is a daily function of our business and it works. You should try it for yourself.

Pay attention to details

The other day we got a text from a customer that wanted exterior lighting attached to a commercial building, seen here. In a text he said; ” LED Wall Packs with photo sensors”. It went right over our head and on our contract it made no reference of “Wall Packs” so, we proceeded to install commercial grade LED floodlights. After we had installed the floodlights, we had another job with the same customer at the same property, to removed old high pressure sodium vapors and then to replaced them with new low pressure sodium vapor lighting, seen here.

Here is how the problems occurred. For one there weren’t any specifications mentioned in the contract that we sent to him nor did the customer send us any specifications on what fixtures he wanted installed. So when the customer looked at our original proposal, he was assuming that the text that he had sent several days earlier was understood and, that we were going to install the wall packs with sensors. However, without specifications during the drafting of our proposal, we had set in motion to begin designing a system that would work in that application. It simply slipped through the cracks within the estimate and was not noticed by either the customer or our company. After seeing the estimate, the customer sent another text that said; “Estimate approved”. So, from there we proceeded with our design which was to install LED floodlights that were controlled by a Timer.

After the installation was complete, I sent a video of the completed project to the customer. After that, we moved forward and started the next project to remove and install new sodium vapor lights. So, when we finished that project, we sent the customer another video showing him the completed project. When we sent an invoice to collect payment, the customer made mention via text telling us that we didn’t do what he had asked. Imagine the consternation and our dismay to this statement. I called him back straightway. The customer went on to say that the lighting was fine however, he had assumed that we were going to install that which he had requested via his text. This is one of the examples as to why contracts and specifications are a must. Remember that contracts become binding once the contract is signed. The customer was understanding and understood that this just fell through the cracks. We will do everything in our power to make sure this doesn’t happen again. We had no intention to deceive or take advantage of this good customer and we were very sorry about this mishap but you must always pay attention to details.

Switching out

We have some very interesting requests at times but for the most part there are simple requests that come easy. Today we were finishing up on a call we got last week to move an existing lamp fixture on a high ceiling.

Well we had to order the cable from a lamp supply house that got it to us in about 3 days. With that we returned this morning to move the fixture. Last week we did the leg work with a laser to center the fixture over the new place for the table. So today what we did was to remove the fixture, set an anchor point to hang from and reinstalled the fixture. It went pretty smooth. While we were there the Homeowner requested a new dimmer for his counter pendant lights in the kitchen which were too bright. It was a huge blessing due to the fact that we had prayed to make a profit because we knew it would be hard to come out even knowing it was our second time back to the property after ordering a new cable. It all worked out!

See our youtube channel with a video of this project.
