Underground Panel Run

Last week we had a small project go big. The home owner needed a 120v outlet ran to his Motor Coach. After we agreed on a price, we showed up the next day to install the outlet which as it turns out was 90 feet from the Panel. The owner upped the anti by asking us to install a 50 Amp; a 30 Amp and a 20 Amp for the Motor Coach. This was a new twist that made us redesign the underground run up to a 70 Amp Panel. It was almost twice the price but now the homeowner has what he needs for just about any application. We used a trencher for the first time and it made the cut only about an hour long.

Another project we undertook last week was the replacing of 82 florescent lamps at a retail Payday Loan company. The lighting was very sketchy as the years had proven to be mostly adding lamps with of different types and different color temperatures. Two stores where were replaced the lamps are older buildings however, the new owner takes pride in presentation and wants a consistency throughout all of their properties.

Then we had two 3 exterior outlets that needed to be installed that were long and time consuming. Ethan (Pictured above) had to dig 50′ along a planter then install 2 single gang boxes and install a 30′ EMT run along side the owners home…. all for one run. He did this on his own which was great.

We are in the middle of a rather large underground project. It didn’t start out that way though. We were just going to add some exterior underground outlets for a Motorhome and a gate opener. It turns out that the homeowner wanted a 50 amp outlet; a 30 amp outlet; and a 20 amp outlet ran to the Motorhome. The price just went from a single outlet to a new 70 Amp Panel run. We had to change the rate to a 100′ Panel run from the Service Panel. This could have been sticker shock and it was to a degree however, he was happy that he would be able to run both of his AC units in the Motorhome.

So with that we used a trencher for the 90′ underground run. The ground was rocky but we finished the cut in an hour. That gave us more time to run our electrical and we nearly finished it except that the breakers didn’t match the new Panel. So we will continue this day with our quest and God willing we will finish today. Thank you Lord for all the business!

Rookie Mistake

Yesterday, we went to a home where the electrical was run along the exterior of the house. The problem was that whoever did it, had a little experience and ran the electrical in PVC attached along the side of the building. Either they didn’t want to run it in the ground or, didn’t know that you must always run PVC in the ground and metal above ground. Metal is the correct way to run electrical above ground and it should connect to PVC underground.

Fire!

Yesterday there was a call over to a Duplex where there are two families living. The night before there was a fire in one of the 220 outlets. The renter noticed a sound coming from the laundry room. You see, earlier that evening a breaker had tripped, so the renter went out to the panel and reset a 30 amp 2-pole breaker that was shut off. When they returned from an errand is when they heard the noise. The man swiftly ran out to the laundry room and saw that a fire had started in the clothes dryer outlet.

The renter did one of the smartest things that I have ever seen. He grabbed a handful of Flour and suffocated the flames by throwing it over the outlet. DO NOT USE WATER ON AN ELECTRICAL FIRE! 911 was called and the Fire Department came and kept the family at bay as they inspected the home. After 2 hours they allowed the family to return to their home stating that there were not at risk.

When we were called in the morning, we went straight out to the site to access the situation. We looked at the damage…

Fire Damage

Here, you can see the damage made by the fire department who were searching for potential combustion ambers. We, after seeing the damage caused by the fire, cut the wire back to a non-damaged section of the wire and accessed that there was not significant damage beyond 3″ from the burnt outlet. That was because of the heads up actions of the tenant. The 220 outlet that was installed was not grounded properly. The person that installed the outlet used a 3 prong outlet that has two hot’s and a ground and didn’t use a 4 prong that has a ground that comes from the panel. Another problem was that the cable was not a Romex. It was a SJO cable with a soft rubber insulation that should not have been used.

After seeing the Panel, we were able to clean it up significantly. It was exposed to the elements for too long…

This is one case where potentially two families could have lost their lives if it weren’t for a sharp tenant. God Bless you man.

Do this, do that

One thing that helps us to expand and to grow is when customers begin to understand that you have a competent crew. After being at this current project, we have a customer that continues to add more to our plate. It’s awesome when a customer continues to add work on a project. It secures paychecks for a while and helps our companies growth.

We started this project where the customer asked us to change some lighting, and repair some outlets and switches. We got the estimate, so we returned to the job to find out that the customer wanted 4 extra lights changed out, repair their heater that’s not working and move the master bathroom GFCI closer to the sink. Well at the end of the day they also wanted us to return to repair more outlets and add 2 new exhaust fans, a ceiling heater, 2 new bathroom sconces, troubleshoot a bedroom and add 2 more GFCI’s.

Wow, That is pretty cool! Thank the Good Lord for work!

New Outlets

Year after year we see many people adding new outlets for many different reasons. For instance, you buy a new Microwave and it draws 1000 watts. You plugged it into the same circuit as your new dual door refrigerator which draws around 1000 to 1500 watts while running. Now you are already over the wattage capacity of a general 20 amp circuit which are designed for a 2,400 watt capacity and you trip a circuit breaker. So, usually a client will call us and say; “Why is my new microwave not working right?” Well, when you put a new small countertop appliance into your 1990 Mobile home you’ll need to give us a call. In most older homes countertop outlets are tied to other outlets throughout the home. In today’s homes, your large kitchen appliances are wired with dedicated outlets, which means that they have their own dedicated 20 amp circuit that goes only to that appliance and no where else.

We were just recently called to a home with the exact problem in Banning, CA.

We can install a new 15 or 20 amp circuit for around $350. In this case we were able to give a senior discount where the total was right around $275. It will depend on the location of your new outlet, size of your panel and overall computed load before we can determine your cost.
