Our Service Business in beginning to grow

Well it’s been a while since we’ve blogged here and so I thought it appropriate to bring this blog post up to speed with where we are these days. So, with no reluctance whatsoever I began focusing our efforts on the Service Industry. I was really trying to find a niche for JB Electric and as we continued to grow, I noticed that some of our local Plumbers had found a way to get thousands of “house Calls” every year.

Their focus is primarily Service Calls to customers residences. So with that, I began to set up a pricing system for such items as; Ceiling Fans, GFCI Outlets, Switches, Dimmers and Troubleshooting problems. It has been growing steadily. So much so that we bought a new Service Van to facilitate our efforts. It will cost you to enter into the Service Industry however, we have found that there are still opportunities to make a profit.

Lastly, what we have found is there is always room for more local Service Businesses. Don’t think that you don’t have a snowballs chance? Give it a try and you’ll find if you make the effort, put in extra time and focus on your market you’ll do just fine. And remember there will be speedbumps that will frustrate you but you just need to stay persistent.

We received a call from a large international company about that needed quite a bit of electrical done at one of there warehouses. First we were contracted to install new power for a gutted air compressor. It basically had a tank and a motor…a three phase motor. We had to build a new electrical system for it to work and it was a little difficult but ended up being a fun job.

It was supposed to look like the photo below…

But it had nothing to our dismay. Either way we added a new 3 phase disconnect which we wee able to pull from an existing source and dedicate it for the compressor alone.

Then we ran 120′ of conduit at 43′ above grade for a new shoe-box machine. We had access to a lift that reached the height that we needed. We installed a new disconnect for the”box  machine” and although it is a 120v single phase, we connected it to one side of the disconnect and hard wired the machine to it.

Lastly, we installed 6 new quad outlets for their “Returns” area. We pulled over 1200′ of linear wire because the outlets were so far away from the service panel.

Underground Panel Run

Last week we had a small project go big. The home owner needed a 120v outlet ran to his Motor Coach. After we agreed on a price, we showed up the next day to install the outlet which as it turns out was 90 feet from the Panel. The owner upped the anti by asking us to install a 50 Amp; a 30 Amp and a 20 Amp for the Motor Coach. This was a new twist that made us redesign the underground run up to a 70 Amp Panel. It was almost twice the price but now the homeowner has what he needs for just about any application. We used a trencher for the first time and it made the cut only about an hour long.

Another project we undertook last week was the replacing of 82 florescent lamps at a retail Payday Loan company. The lighting was very sketchy as the years had proven to be mostly adding lamps with of different types and different color temperatures. Two stores where were replaced the lamps are older buildings however, the new owner takes pride in presentation and wants a consistency throughout all of their properties.

Then we had two 3 exterior outlets that needed to be installed that were long and time consuming. Ethan (Pictured above) had to dig 50′ along a planter then install 2 single gang boxes and install a 30′ EMT run along side the owners home…. all for one run. He did this on his own which was great.

We are in the middle of a rather large underground project. It didn’t start out that way though. We were just going to add some exterior underground outlets for a Motorhome and a gate opener. It turns out that the homeowner wanted a 50 amp outlet; a 30 amp outlet; and a 20 amp outlet ran to the Motorhome. The price just went from a single outlet to a new 70 Amp Panel run. We had to change the rate to a 100′ Panel run from the Service Panel. This could have been sticker shock and it was to a degree however, he was happy that he would be able to run both of his AC units in the Motorhome.

So with that we used a trencher for the 90′ underground run. The ground was rocky but we finished the cut in an hour. That gave us more time to run our electrical and we nearly finished it except that the breakers didn’t match the new Panel. So we will continue this day with our quest and God willing we will finish today. Thank you Lord for all the business!

Bidding Bonanza

Every now and again we receive opportunities to bid on large projects. There is one in particular that I’m thinking of that is a job to replace all of the exterior lighting for an entire storage facility. This job is so big that it will take a crew of three men approximately 2 weeks to complete it.

The kicker is that each of the lights are about $1000 ea. and there are quite a few to replace. A lot of times you will submit a bid and never really expect it to come to pass, and then it does. On the other hand, there are those that you say to yourself “We will get this one” and it slips through you fingers. You never know.

So for now, we will continue to bid on large projects and you never know which one you’ll get until the contract is signed.

Sign, Sign, Sign

Every now and again we get a smart character that slithers around signing a contract. However, it usually happens when things are busy and after the submission of a bid. The customer calls and say “OK, go ahead and do the job”. Then the job is scheduled and/or the work is being performed. This happened yesterday, but it didn’t affect us much. The customer is an old time owner of several apartments and houses. We knew the cash was available for payment and we had worked for this person before so even though we had begun the new project, we didn’t see any need for alarm.

When we finished the job, we went to collect and the customer said; “Can you give us a discount?”. To which was replied; “How do you figure?”. The bill was paid however, we granted a one time discount to the customer for $100.00. This appeased the customer and it didn’t break the bank on our end.

Lessons learned 101: Have your customer sign the contract.

Rookie Mistake

Yesterday, we went to a home where the electrical was run along the exterior of the house. The problem was that whoever did it, had a little experience and ran the electrical in PVC attached along the side of the building. Either they didn’t want to run it in the ground or, didn’t know that you must always run PVC in the ground and metal above ground. Metal is the correct way to run electrical above ground and it should connect to PVC underground.

Fire!

Yesterday there was a call over to a Duplex where there are two families living. The night before there was a fire in one of the 220 outlets. The renter noticed a sound coming from the laundry room. You see, earlier that evening a breaker had tripped, so the renter went out to the panel and reset a 30 amp 2-pole breaker that was shut off. When they returned from an errand is when they heard the noise. The man swiftly ran out to the laundry room and saw that a fire had started in the clothes dryer outlet.

The renter did one of the smartest things that I have ever seen. He grabbed a handful of Flour and suffocated the flames by throwing it over the outlet. DO NOT USE WATER ON AN ELECTRICAL FIRE! 911 was called and the Fire Department came and kept the family at bay as they inspected the home. After 2 hours they allowed the family to return to their home stating that there were not at risk.

When we were called in the morning, we went straight out to the site to access the situation. We looked at the damage…

Fire Damage

Here, you can see the damage made by the fire department who were searching for potential combustion ambers. We, after seeing the damage caused by the fire, cut the wire back to a non-damaged section of the wire and accessed that there was not significant damage beyond 3″ from the burnt outlet. That was because of the heads up actions of the tenant. The 220 outlet that was installed was not grounded properly. The person that installed the outlet used a 3 prong outlet that has two hot’s and a ground and didn’t use a 4 prong that has a ground that comes from the panel. Another problem was that the cable was not a Romex. It was a SJO cable with a soft rubber insulation that should not have been used.

After seeing the Panel, we were able to clean it up significantly. It was exposed to the elements for too long…

This is one case where potentially two families could have lost their lives if it weren’t for a sharp tenant. God Bless you man.
