Our Service Business in beginning to grow

Well it’s been a while since we’ve blogged here and so I thought it appropriate to bring this blog post up to speed with where we are these days. So, with no reluctance whatsoever I began focusing our efforts on the Service Industry. I was really trying to find a niche for JB Electric and as we continued to grow, I noticed that some of our local Plumbers had found a way to get thousands of “house Calls” every year.

Their focus is primarily Service Calls to customers residences. So with that, I began to set up a pricing system for such items as; Ceiling Fans, GFCI Outlets, Switches, Dimmers and Troubleshooting problems. It has been growing steadily. So much so that we bought a new Service Van to facilitate our efforts. It will cost you to enter into the Service Industry however, we have found that there are still opportunities to make a profit.

Lastly, what we have found is there is always room for more local Service Businesses. Don’t think that you don’t have a snowballs chance? Give it a try and you’ll find if you make the effort, put in extra time and focus on your market you’ll do just fine. And remember there will be speedbumps that will frustrate you but you just need to stay persistent.

We received a call from a large international company about that needed quite a bit of electrical done at one of there warehouses. First we were contracted to install new power for a gutted air compressor. It basically had a tank and a motor…a three phase motor. We had to build a new electrical system for it to work and it was a little difficult but ended up being a fun job.

It was supposed to look like the photo below…

But it had nothing to our dismay. Either way we added a new 3 phase disconnect which we wee able to pull from an existing source and dedicate it for the compressor alone.

Then we ran 120′ of conduit at 43′ above grade for a new shoe-box machine. We had access to a lift that reached the height that we needed. We installed a new disconnect for the”box  machine” and although it is a 120v single phase, we connected it to one side of the disconnect and hard wired the machine to it.

Lastly, we installed 6 new quad outlets for their “Returns” area. We pulled over 1200′ of linear wire because the outlets were so far away from the service panel.

Roberto Cavalli Install

We have been contracted to install the electrical and low voltage at the new Roberto Cavalli store at the Premium Hills Outlets. It has been a six week project and it is nearly complete. We started the rough back in May and have been on site with our crew since the project began. We have had a few bumps here and there along the way but it all worked out as it usually does when we submit every day to the Lord Yeshua! We begin everyday in Word and prayer for everything from safety to protection and everything in between.

Existing Panel

The existing panel was from the prior tenant. Some of our circuits were already run through existing conduit along the ceiling of which we were able to use for some of our front of house electrical runs however, we had to get the wires into the panel from above and from the automated panel that we removed which was right next to the panel we were going to use. It was a large process to move the existing circuits into the “new” panel and then insert the existing runs that were over to the panel through conduits. So, we installed j-boxes 13′ above floor finish (AFF) and connected them into the panel with 3/4″ and 1″ conduit runs. We ran new conduits down the wall attached to unistrut and into the panel where we were able to connect our runs in the j-boxes. We did other things to get it done but the blessing with this process is that we were able to use the existing panel to lengthen some of our wires with wire nuts in order to make it to the breakers. Much like a large junction box.

Commercial Fabrication Shop

Over the last week we have been very busy. Sorry we haven’t had time to post anything during that time. We have been installing large commercial equipment for a Fabrication Shop.

This De-burring machine is 3 phase 480v 70 amps. The machine was moved to a new location and we had to rewire it and get it working. We didn’t have a lot of time to do it being that the owner had a large order to complete. We had to remove a section of the power run and relocate it with an additional 40 ft. of conduit and wire. We installed pull boxes at two locations and attached everything to the ceiling using existing unistrut and we added several feet as well. The main sub-panel was not marked correctly so that added a little time to the project just trying to figure out which phases were going where. In the end we had the machine up in two days.

We also added a circuit for a cutting machine that took us a little over a half day to complete.

Sign, Sign, Sign

Every now and again we get a smart character that slithers around signing a contract. However, it usually happens when things are busy and after the submission of a bid. The customer calls and say “OK, go ahead and do the job”. Then the job is scheduled and/or the work is being performed. This happened yesterday, but it didn’t affect us much. The customer is an old time owner of several apartments and houses. We knew the cash was available for payment and we had worked for this person before so even though we had begun the new project, we didn’t see any need for alarm.

When we finished the job, we went to collect and the customer said; “Can you give us a discount?”. To which was replied; “How do you figure?”. The bill was paid however, we granted a one time discount to the customer for $100.00. This appeased the customer and it didn’t break the bank on our end.

Lessons learned 101: Have your customer sign the contract.

Fire!

Yesterday there was a call over to a Duplex where there are two families living. The night before there was a fire in one of the 220 outlets. The renter noticed a sound coming from the laundry room. You see, earlier that evening a breaker had tripped, so the renter went out to the panel and reset a 30 amp 2-pole breaker that was shut off. When they returned from an errand is when they heard the noise. The man swiftly ran out to the laundry room and saw that a fire had started in the clothes dryer outlet.

The renter did one of the smartest things that I have ever seen. He grabbed a handful of Flour and suffocated the flames by throwing it over the outlet. DO NOT USE WATER ON AN ELECTRICAL FIRE! 911 was called and the Fire Department came and kept the family at bay as they inspected the home. After 2 hours they allowed the family to return to their home stating that there were not at risk.

When we were called in the morning, we went straight out to the site to access the situation. We looked at the damage…

Fire Damage

Here, you can see the damage made by the fire department who were searching for potential combustion ambers. We, after seeing the damage caused by the fire, cut the wire back to a non-damaged section of the wire and accessed that there was not significant damage beyond 3″ from the burnt outlet. That was because of the heads up actions of the tenant. The 220 outlet that was installed was not grounded properly. The person that installed the outlet used a 3 prong outlet that has two hot’s and a ground and didn’t use a 4 prong that has a ground that comes from the panel. Another problem was that the cable was not a Romex. It was a SJO cable with a soft rubber insulation that should not have been used.

After seeing the Panel, we were able to clean it up significantly. It was exposed to the elements for too long…

This is one case where potentially two families could have lost their lives if it weren’t for a sharp tenant. God Bless you man.

New meets old

Today we installed four new wall lights to an old house. We first had to cut our holes where we wanted to place the lights. Then we ran our 14/2 wires to each location ending up with our final wire going into the original light box that was attached to a dimmer inside the home.

After we ran all of our wire to the new boxes we mounted the fixtures.

They came out beautiful! It made an old home look new.
