Car Chargers

Yesterday we installed a Car Charger for a customer. His vehicles were both electric only vehicles. With that, he is able to charge his Tesla batteries which are 60 KWH and provide him with about 60 miles of electric power. His wife’s BMW batteries are 45 KWH and provide roughly 50 miles. Neither he or his wife are getting much mileage however he works locally and leases his vehicles. A hybrid allows you the option of having a dual system. One that uses gasoline and electric power and the best part is that the gasoline engine charges your batteries for when you are in gasoline mode.

Residential loads and Calculation

Load Calculation for residential homes is very daunting. There are so many codes to break down and articles from the NEC, that each time you do a load calculation on a home you need to ensure that you calculate it accurately. I use a calculator that I built in Excel. I found it online and followed the instructor’s easy to follow guide on how to build it. It was produced by an electrical engineer named Chad Kurdi on YouTube.

The Load Entrance calculator, will guide you through single family dwelling load calculation with NEC Codes built right in to the Excel document. You will have to painstakingly build it as you go along if you have the time and patience, and a little knowledge of how Excel works. Mr. Kurdi explains it very well and is a great instructor.

If you do not have the time or patience, you can purchase software from several different companies that have it available and it costs around $2,000 to purchase, give or take. I would recommend the online course because it explains how load calculation works as opposed to entering a number into a program and getting the answer which by the way, the Excel document will do that for you too. However, building it yourself gives you an education as well. Take my advice and build it and save the two grand for job capital.
